Magical traditions: Full moon flower fairies

Magical traditions: Full moon flower fairies

Some people have asked for some ideas or traditions to start with their kids that are magically inspired. This tradition is one we started when Leif was 4 or so, and we love it because it is simple, imaginative and nature-based.

Fall 2017 update

The big deal around here is that I left my full-time “grown-up job” to stay home with my family and focus on Potion Kit full-time just last week! It’s a gigantic leap of faith for us but it feels so right.

Potion Ingredient Highlight: Rumpus Root

Potion Ingredient Highlight: Rumpus Root

Let the wild rumpus begin!

This brownish, tea-stained root is suspended in a mysterious, gelatinous solution. It smells spicy on the nose, but familiar, like Christmas? Or is it the smell of boy's socks? Depends on the person doing the smelling, I suppose.

Potion Feature: Nix Nightmares

Potion Feature: Nix Nightmares

This is one of our most requested potions - either parent's asking if we can include it just in case, or a special request from a child to help with their slumber-state. It's included in the Pixie book boxes and refill sets.

The ingredients are important. But, more importantly, the ritual is what really makes this potion shine. Teaching children to practice thoughtful, intentional routines is a skill they can use forever.

NIX NIGHTMARES
A potion to scare away nightmares
Combine in a mortar and smash:
2 drops Sirop of Stars
1 drop Blue Moonlight
1 pinch Fizzle-Sizzle
1 sprinkle Tatiana’s Thistledown
Stir all ingredients into a glass of cold water and then place the glass in the freezer for five minutes. (Do not let the potion freeze or you’ll ruin it! Be careful not to spill when taking the potion in and out of the freezer.)
While the potion is chilling, find a clean washcloth and a safety pin. Remove glass from freezer and dip the safety pin into the potion.
Stir the potion with the pin 3 times to the right, then 3 times to the left. Remove the pin and then pour out the potion into a clean sink.
Wash the sink.
Pin the safety pin onto the washcloth and place the washcloth beneath a pillow to stop nightmares.
Sleep well!

2016 Holiday in review

2016 Holiday in review

We made it!

The 2016 holiday season was...crazy. So rewarding though, each time a package went out it felt like a little missive of magic was being sent out into the world. The studio was busy day and night, ribbons flying and the sounds of taping boxes, printing labels and stuffing filler.

We did two holiday markets. It was a first and it was an unbelievable experience. Seeing the kids interact with the potions and asking their very serious questions about magic. They were continually asking about buying single potions so that is something I'll look at for the coming year.

Now the notes are coming back - thank you to everyone who has sent one. Here are my favorites. They are sure to carry me straight through 2017.

The potion kit arrived today and Abbey loves it! We just made the potion to draw gnomes into our flower bed!! The kit is as beautiful as I thought it would be. Thanks again for getting it to us!!” — MELISSA

Just wanted to let you know how much my daughter LOVED this kit! Was her favorite present! Thanks so much!” — AMANDA

I have to tell you, Lotus loves her potion kit! It has its own cupboard in the kitchen and she plays with it almost everyday! She loves that its glass...cause it means she is grown up! I received it just in time and Im so glad as it was the complete hit...blew all the store bought toys out of the water. Thank you!” — VICTORIA

I can’t tell you what fun this is! My mom was so excited to see the boxes and they are amazing! The boys have been making potions since they got in the car. Thank you so very much for your beautiful product. It is truly magical.” — JOELLE

Studio progress

Studio progress

I'm so excited! This summer we have been building out our barn to create a new PotionKit studio.

So many little drawers to fill with magical bits of this and that. It means that each kit can have some improvised goodies - a feather, crystals, acorns, or potion cards that match the interest of the magician receiving the box.

We are hoping to have the studio done mid-September in time for Halloween and Christmas orders. Can't wait!

A few in-progress shots.
